we believe horn barbecue has closed

either the one remaining horn barbecue restaurant at 464 eighth street in oakland is on a very long, unannounced summer break, or...

'it's out of business,' said a kindly older gentleman saturday, august 1, at lunchtime, from his temporary living quarters near the restaurant's doorway. 'all this man's places have gone out of business.'

this matter-of-fact tip about chef matt horn's former barbecue empire might be correct – the simplest answer usually is – though to be fair, in this very particular case...it's complicated.

as local customers know, horn barbecue has kept erratic hours before, only to reopen with no explanation. even horn's regular opening hours vary across sites, and often don't match what's posted on the door. and no larger media outlets have officially called the remaining horn location closed, which gives us pause.

perhaps most confusing is that horn oakland is marked 'open' across the internet – on google, yelp, the main website, apple maps – and menus remain up for online ordering. it was even renewed, just barely over a month ago, as a 2026 bib gourmand for california in the michelin guide.

however, from what we can tell, based on far too many attempted visits during thursday-sunday opening hours (we went with the hours on the door), the former oakland barbecue destination did not serve food or drink once the entire month of july, and has yet to open so far in august.

we're not the only ones to have noticed: there is a clear internet trail on google, yelp and reddit of frustrated summer customers who feel snowed, having wasted time, plans and gas money traveling to an unexpectedly dark restaurant – hence this post.

compound that with a spring of abrupt closures and evictions for other horn properties in fresno, lafayette and elk grove, and for the final horn to be dormant does not bode well.

we have attempted to reach the venue multiple times by phone, email and dms over the last several weeks, with no response.

rather than provide an apology or clear update on the venue, the only recent signs of life from horn online have been ads (since removed) promoting ticket sales to the inaugural black smoke invitational, planned for july 26 in moss landing, that was then postponed due to 'unforeseen regulatory permitting requirements and red tape,' according to a note posted on the event's website.

out of respect for those same oakland-area customers who supported horn from the beginning of his career, through his meteoric rise to fame and subsequent struggles, if horn oakland has closed – and especially if it hasn't – we ask the team to kindly clarify their one remaining restaurant's opening information.
