the athletic club oakland has closed

sports-themed social bar and club the athletic club oakland has closed. the announcement was made today on instagram; yesterday, february 8, 2026, super bowl sunday, was the bar's final day of business.

the athletic club was founded by co-owners miles palliser and ezra berman in 2018, turning a former steak house space at 59 grand avenue in oakland into an uptown haven for east bay sports fans. in today's personal announcement, palliser stated, "as so many bars and restaurants know, these times are tough, and we've been doing everything we can think of to keep this place alive. we love it, we love oakland, we love the community that we've built here...but at this time, the state of affairs for our business and oakland in general, we just can't go on any longer, and so we are closing the business today."

palliser mentioned a potential new owner for the space (the timing and funding had not quite worked out for the spot to remain open now) and left fans with a bit of hope for a future transition and reopening, encouraging anyone interested in being a part of that to dm the team.
