shattuck roundup - a few new spots coming soon

in honor of back-to-school week for berkeley public schools (we see you teachers), here's a little roundup of new spots, mostly larger chains, coming soon to the berkeley corridor and perpetual work-in-progress that is shattuck avenue – land of fast, easy meals and happy hour gatherings.

first, west coast dumpling chain dough zone has landed the handsome, industrial space at 1912 shattuck avenue, right next door to triple rock brewing. the group is currently hiring and training new staffers at its walnut creek location, and will open the concrete and glass doors onto their new fast-casual downtown berkeley space within the next few weeks. look out for updates on instagram. dough zone will be at 1912 shattuck avenue in berkeley.

across the street, at the, um, base of ace, cold stone creamery is making a return to berkeley. (a former location at 2204 shattuck has long been closed.) as most know, the parlor chain is known for its 'mix-ins' such as candy, cake, fruit, nuts, sprinkles and the like, mixed into ice cream on a frozen stone slab. cold stone creamery's upcoming berkeley location will be at 1951 shattuck avenue. (there is also a new one opening soon in alameda.)

nearby, grab-and-go lunch chain mendocino farms, long familiar in financial districts for its easy menu of soups, wraps, salads and sandwiches, will reanimate the long-dormant cafe space adjacent to marugame. set into the base of the berkeley way west building, the modern space originally opened in late 2019 as a fancy new noah's bagels before the pandemic quickly shut it down. mendocino farms should open this october at 1919 shattuck avenue in berkeley.

further south, in what appears to be more of an independent small business opening, look for newcomer yume mori to soon refresh the area of shattuck between durant and bancroft. on offer will be specialty matcha drinks, crepes, desserts and other lighter japanese cafe fare. yume mori should open by the end of this month at 2319A shattuck avenue in berkeley.
