for nearly four decades, the spacious food court at the public market emeryville has offered east bay diners and visitors three constants: comfort, choice and, maybe above all, change.

this is not a bad thing. the occasional healthy refresh and turnover at the large, relaxed, industrial space is part of the attraction for diners.

that flux has meant a wide range of cuisines and cooking at the market through the years, from basic to star-making, trendy to soulful, at a friendly price point from across the counters of those welcoming kiosks. one food stall is even dedicated solely to la cocina kitchen incubator alums, often on their way to owning their own brick-and-mortars.

even during covid, the large, airy complex with easy parking and range of funky, family-friendly choices helped to retain customer traffic where other dining destinations were less lucky. and of course, some long-loved food businesses have endured here for years, even decades, adding a touch of vintage familiarity to the market's charms.

new offerings for 2025 include alma y sazon vegan mexican and, next door, demiya yoshoku western-influenced japanese cuisine. photo credit berkeley eats.

all kinds of community visitors (the 'public' in public market), from after-work groups to extended families, parents with busy children to peaceful, solo regulars are accommodated, with the goal being that most everyone can find a comfortable spot to relax and a dish or drink to satisfy.
