nabolom bakery and pizzeria owners julia elliott and sabra stepak outlined the main reasons for their decision to close the 50-year-old berkeley institution this past weekend in a personal statement posted to facebook on october 18. friends since junior high in berkeley, the two frequented nabolom growing up, and took over the bakery, a collective founded in 1976, as private owners soon after the collective dissolved and the bakery faced closure in 2016. according to the post, root causes for the closure of nabolom 2.0 included political backlash online as well as dropped sales due to the venue's progressive and pro-community views (anti-ICE, anti-upzoning in the elmwood), along with financial unsustainability in the current economy. the chronicle was the first to report on the posted reasons for the closure. nabolom was at 2708 russell street in berkeley, and shuttered permanently on october 18.
