big news for a decades-old berkeley bakery and shop: berkeley bagels, at 1281 gilman street in berkeley, has announced a second bagel shop coming soon to 1941 university avenue, near downtown berkeley.
berkeley bagels at 1281 gilman street in berkeley has been in operation for almost 25 years, but the same owners have managed a series of bagel shops in that location, using the same bagel recipes, since 1974. locals might recall first brother's bagels, then boogie woogie bagel boy at the gilman address, before berkeley bagels opened in 2002.

dessert n spice, the two-year-old tenants of the 1941 university space, will wrap up operations this week. customers can continue to find dessert n spice pastries, cakes, chai and coffee drinks at newer berkeley venue dera cafe, opened in may from the same owner, located nearby at 1620 shattuck avenue.
after a quick turnaround, berkeley bagels plans to open their second location at 1941 university on august 17, 2026. customers can expect the same menu of bagels, bagel sandwiches and melts, fresh juices, smoothies, thai iced tea, challah, vietnamese coffee drinks, boba and other cafe fare as at the longstanding gilman location.
