a visit to reve bistro
family-owned reve bistro has been a favorite in lafayette for 10 years, and features classic french fare from chef paul magu-lecugy. photo berkeley eats.

we managed to slip away on a weeknight, all the way to lafayette, for dinner at a very special – one might even say dreamy – little french bistro.

we had heard about reve bistro from friends who love french food and wine – nothing but good adjectives: 'classic,' 'romantic,' 'birthday-worthy.' what we didn't know was that that our cozy bistro meal would reflect a world-class career on the plate.

reve's french-born chef paul magu-lecugy trained under chefs alain ducasse and gerard besson. in 2000, he joined chef sylvain portay's team in san francisco at the former dining room at the ritz-carlton, then the kitchen at the st. regis as executive sous, before opening reve with his wife and partner, wine director and co-owner laura magu, in 2016.

the couple met while working at the ritz-carlton (she was in banquets and hospitality), married and moved to her native east bay. they opened reve together as a true labor of love – in part to fulfill a dream, in part to ease raising a family (they have three daughters) without the burden of a long commute for chef paul into san francisco.

we were seated in a tucked-away back garden under the trees, an unexpected haven with warming heat lamps and even blankets for when the sun dipped. quirky, french-inspired garden art dotted the view, and the wee bistro's charming brick interior and sparkling chandeliers grew visible from the garden through its wide windows as the evening progressed.

all around us, diners shared special occasions with friends and family, and comfortable laughter and the occasional neighborly wave among tables were all part of the ambience. we saw dressy and casual gatherings, intimate dates, older friends, and families with young diners, and were put immediately at ease by the friendly waitstaff and overall neighborhood charm.

reve's classic, seasonal bistro plates from chef magu-lecugy and chef de cuisine daniel zeibell (ad hoc) are somehow lightened with plays on texture – a chilled vichyssoise, for example, usually heavy with potato and cream, was smooth and unbelievably light, topped with a crispy little confetti heap of fine, fried leeks and tiny chives.

a plate of silken 'faux' gras au torchon, made with duck livers, and served with bright, traditional accoutrements (including sauternes – the wine list here is exclusively french, something special in this area), was an expert alternative, and almost preferable to this california palate than the real thing.

plump rabbit leg confit came sauced with a mustard jus on a bed of tender 'parisienne' gnocchi – made with poached, gluten-free pate de choux – light, luscious little vehicles for the jus, punctuated by spring radish and fresh english peas. that evening's special of buttery, pan-fried halibut over sweet, spring carrots two ways – one an intensely flavorful puree – was dotted with a lively sauce vierge and delicate pine nuts.

even the classic french desserts (traditional creme brulee, ile flottante) were richly satisfying but also just enough, a fun, sophisticated and delectable finish to the meal.

in an age of influencers and media hype, when everything is more expensive all the time and careful choices need to be made, we're so glad that we learned about reve through trusted word of mouth. it endures for all the best reasons that an approachable, classic french bistro should be a pleasure, and is well worth passage through the tunnel (or from anywhere) to this little corner of lafayette.

reve bistro is open for dinner tuesday-saturday, and in good news for summer diners will be open for lunch fridays and saturdays through july 18, with a three-course prix-fixe special and family-style steak frites.

reve bistro is at 960 moraga road, suite f, in lafayette.
