a good sandwich - turkey baguette at evergreen
evergreen cafe's turkey and slaw baguette sandwich is a recent addition to its seasonally shifting menu.
quietly open since early last summer, the soul-soothing little berkeley cafe serves bowls, toasts and sandwiches for a range of diets, along with highwire coffee drinks, tea curated from blue willow tea, house juices and coolers.
though sandwiches are available to-go, the move here is to ask for the baguette toasted, then add a cup of something delicious (we chose a pot of blue willow's berkeley brunch tea) and cafe bathe for a bit. the clean space outfitted in brick and tile (the former bartavelle) is a charming, understated place to take a friend or just a good, deep breath.

evergreen's turkey baguette came halved and served on vintage china, and was deeply satisfying – toasted to a just-right crisp and layered with delicate, thinly-sliced turkey, a light touch of dijonaise and a winter-weather sprinkling of house-pickled red onion and cabbage slaw.
evergreen cafe features added amenities such as rotating local art, and special food and drink collabs with neighbors and friends (including occasional evening events). we also enjoy its house-made baked goods; fridays and saturdays feature good luck bakery pastries.
evergreen cafe is at 1621 san pablo avenue in berkeley.
