we managed to swing through new, philly-style sandwich shop hoagie's world of hoagies at 2618 telegraph avenue in berkeley on opening day.

for our inaugural run, we opted for a classic italian hoagie – such a favorite, especially when done well by an east coast native.

a soft, satisfying amoroso's roll is layered generously (but not too high) with rich, mild italian cold cuts – capicola, ham, salami, cradled in a thin layer of provolone. next comes lettuce, sliced tomato and light onion for brightness and crunch, and a balanced kiss of good sweet and hot peppers. the kicker? the traditional finish of oil and vinegar and a bit of oregano, just enough to properly dress the sandwich. [chef's kiss.] done.

the sandwich is huge, fun to watch being assembled on the line, and wrapped well, like the present it is.

there are seven styles of hot or cold hoagies on the menu altogether, including a cheesesteak (next time for sure), house-made hot meatball hoagie (our partner's excellent, toasty order), roast pork, turkey, vegan jawn, and a rotating monthly special, along with an array of novelty chips and olipop sodas. also? straus soft serve in cups or cones, and a genius option for either a small (6oz) or large straus milkshake in chocolate, vanilla or twist.

though it drops on the table the size of two sandwiches in one, and could easily – seriously – feed two, our hoagie disappeared pdq. for those with smaller appetites or shorter meal windows, consider a 'lil' jabroni,' a half-sized version of any hoagie on the menu for $10.

thanks in large part to welcoming owner and philadelphia native mo hodges, the cheerfully revamped deli space already feels familiar and inviting, with a handful of crisp two-tops indoors and out on telegraph avenue. the location, near carleton (across from le bateau ivre), also makes for easy parking.

reminder to snackpass users – free delivery for orders over $50, and regulars can also earn points towards a free sandwich. (the shop is also on doordash.)
